CS2 Economy Basics
Fundamentals · 7 min read · Updated May 29, 2026
Counter-Strike is not just an aim game. Half of every round is decided by money: what your team can afford to buy, and what the enemy cannot. CS2 plays first to 13 in a 24-round match (MR12). Everyone starts the half with $800, and you can hold a maximum of $16,000.
Round win rewards
Winning pays well. The exact amount depends on how you won the round:
| How you won | Team reward |
|---|---|
| Bomb planted and detonated (T) | $3,500 |
| Bomb defused (CT) | $3,500 |
| Eliminating the entire enemy team | $3,250 |
| Time runs out / plant denied (CT) | $3,250 |
The player who plants or defuses the bomb earns an extra $300 on top. Planting the bomb also pays the whole T side a bonus even if the round is then lost, which is why planting on a losing round still matters for your economy.
The loss bonus
To stop a match snowballing, losing teams get a payout that grows with each consecutive loss, then resets when they win a round:
| Losses in a row | Loss bonus |
|---|---|
| 1 | $1,400 |
| 2 | $1,900 |
| 3 | $2,400 |
| 4 | $2,900 |
| 5 or more | $3,400 (max) |
One exception: losing a pistol round pays $1,900 instead of $1,400.
Kill rewards by weapon
You also earn money per kill, and harder-to-use weapons pay more. This is why a player on an eco can still rebuild by fragging with a shotgun or SMG.
| Weapon | Per kill |
|---|---|
| Rifles (AK-47, M4, scoped rifles) | $300 |
| AWP | $100 |
| SMGs (except P90) | $600 |
| P90 | $300 |
| Shotguns (except XM1014) | $900 |
| XM1014 | $600 |
| Pistols | $300 |
| Zeus | $100 |
| Knife | $1,500 |
The three buy decisions
- Full eco: buy almost nothing and save. You sacrifice the round to guarantee a full buy next time. Maybe grab a cheap pistol and armor if you can keep money above your save target.
- Force buy: spend everything now, usually after a loss, because you cannot afford a full buy but also cannot afford to fall further behind. SMGs, armor and a few utility are common.
- Full buy: rifle, full armor, and a full set of grenades for everyone. This is your default when the team has roughly $4,000 or more each.
The golden rule: buy together. Five rifles beat three rifles and two half-buys almost every time. Talk to your team before you spend, and watch the enemy loss bonus so you know when they are forced to eco.
